Artscapade 2006

Thel Cardwell paining among the grassy dunes.

A short note on our trip.
After a comfortable coach trip to Victor Harbor our very genial and accommodating hosts Maxine and Philip housed and fed eighteen of us very well, even making hollandaise sauce on request for breakfast. They allowed us to paint in the games room on two wet mornings, potentially doing less damage than a group of children said Philip.People braved the seafront at Port Elliott and sudden rain washed the watercolours off the paper and umbrellas and coats were needed. However the weather was mostly kind to us.

One sleepless artist walked the streets at 2 a.m. with a car following her - then she realized it was a police car. In the morning her roommate found her asleep in bed wearing a warm hat! Another early riser was being watched by a security guard.

Thel was the heroine of the trip. Coming upon a recently crashed car with an unconscious driver at the wheel and lots of smoke billowing she quickly turned off the ignition and called for help. The ambulance soon arrived for one lucky man.

Each evening the artistic works of the day were displayed in the dining room and some excellent paintings were produced. We all had a wonderful time. partly thanks to Pam and Graeme, our very obliging driver.

Anecdotes from Victor Harbour.

Many thanks to Barry Mackie for his generous guide on our first day at V.H. he took several hours to show us the areas and scenes about V.H. that would make good painting spots.

Many thanks also to Terry and Lorraine Lewitzka for their hospitality during our stay; allowing us to use their studio on wet days , teaching some of us portraiture techniques, getting tables and tickets for the Saturday evenings show, and sharing dinner with us.

We’re never too old, we found out! A couple of our members (aged 3 score years plus) were offered an interesting evening and ride in a van with about eight young, dashing teenage men. Unfortunately, the ladies were expected elsewhere and were unable to accept the lads’ offer!

We arrived to a cold spell of weather which caused a happy run on the local op-shops.

On our first serious day out we drove to Port Elliot and painted at Horseshoe Cove where the seas were wild and stormy, with high breakers, and ever changing colours and moods. The weather changed a lot too that day and we were alternately rained on, sunned on, winded on rained on, sprinkled on, and dried out. This created a most challenging day of painting.

One great spot for painting has no loo stop, so we just went behind bushes (good copious sized ones, never fear about that!) but one who shall not be named, after squatting , started to roll downhill and found his/herself unable to rise from the occasion. Did manage in the end though. O! the dangers an artist must confront!

Broken Hill

16th 23rd April.

Artscapade: Our once a year, painting week , this year was to Broken Hill , below is an and excerpt from Velda Palazzi's review.
" To ease the demands on the organizers, we chose to have a tour company organize this tour and we selected Eco Platypus Tours because they have taken other art groups on trips before. Our driver, Graeme and his wife Nola, were most generous to us and catered well and made us as comfortable as possible, even when the bus started playing up.
Part of the deal was morning teas and lunch on board on our painting days and travel to and from our selected sites each day. This worked very well, with good lunches of cold meats, breads, salads and drinks accompanied by the supply of tables and chairs to make this a restful time. Graeme worked us hard each day like a regular slave driver; up at the crack of dawn, breakfast and out on the road by 8.30 and work, work, work! Till around 5pm. After a few days of this we were able to relax a bit after about 3pm at places like the Silverton Hotel. Strictly recreational, mind you!
I think most were very happy with what they produced in the way of paintings or soaked up in the way of inspiration. I know that some also managed to have a great holiday and to get away from cares at home. We all took many photos to remember and to be inspired by in the future.'

Broken Hill is an area that has much to offer the artist. There is very colourful, harsh countryside, a range of interesting hills, the Darling River and Lake Menindee, the picturesque town of Silverton and if this isn't enough there are approximately 35 galleries!

If you have not been on an Artscapade before, book next year. You will not be disappointed. it is a wonderful week of fun, new friends and lots of painting. For further information call Thel Cardwell 03 9716 2215
