Mischief in Miniature by Chris Clelland

Why an exhibition of drawings? There is something special and intimate about a drawing. Drawings record the artists initial thought or developed idea. The most immediate strokes, the weight and pressure of the hand are all clearly seen in any drawing, be it a quick study or a fully developed piece.

The Australian Guild of Realist Artists proudly presents
“Drawing:The Essential Art 2007”.
In the tradition of the masters, this exhibition showcases a wide range of styles and techniques by our artists of today. Be inspired by this group of selected artists invited to share their thoughts and ideas with you. Chris McClelland, a celebrated wildlife artist creates images with pencil you just wouldn’t believe a human hand could do. Observe the contrast between Chris’ absolute reality to the powerful simplicity of the sensual and expressive line used by Margaret Duke to create dynamic figure drawings. View the magic Janet Matthews weaves with a combination of coloured pencil and graphite, in her drawings. Pen lines expressively 'slashed' onto the page to create Italian magic in Alan Rawady’s work. Cathy Hamilton on the other hand draws with passion.

As with any successful art, the passion shines through the exhibited works. The emotion is more immediate in drawing because the pencil is an extension of the artist's hand, with no technical issues to separate them from their image. Nina Dougall states "The pen is like an extra finger on my hand, to draw comes as naturally as breathing".

The Kenneth Jack Drawing Award will be chosen by John Borrack from the selected pieces. Many art lovers will know of the late Kenneth Jack’s love of drawing and this prize is to honour his legacy to the art world, in particular as one of AGRA’s founders.
